Mayor's perambulation of the City bounds: Tuesday 18 July 1837
Mayor: Charles James Sadler
Boundary of city (now including St Clement's) is shown by red line on this map
The following short article was published in Jackson's Oxford Journal on 22 July 1837:

This was an important perambulation, as it was the first inspection of the city bounds following the boundary change of 1835 taking St Clement's into the city of Oxford. As well as city officers and councillors “numerous friends” joined in the ceremony.
There are two surviving boundary stones put up prior to this perambulation bearing the initials C.J.S.:
- on the north side of Cuckoo Lane
- on the Godstow Road.
There are two more illegible stones that may also date from this year:
- on the south side of Cuckoo Lane
- at the west end of Barracks Lane.
