Oxford boundary markers: Set in wall on Godstow Road (1840)

This stone is illegible today, but was recorded thus by John Gilbert:

This stone is set in a wall on the Godstow Road, opposite Godstow car park
In 1839/40 Thomas Mallam was Mayor and James Wyatt was Sheriff of Oxford.

John Gilbert wrote of this stone in 1886:
“A City stone, bearing the same inscription [as this stone] is also built into the wall on the north side of the road just before it winds round into Lower Wolvercote; but this has been removed from some other position and erroneously placed there, as it is not on the boundary at all; (it is a pity this stone should be allowed to remain where it is).”
