Oxford Ghost Signs: Castell's tailors at 13 Broad Street
This mosaic reading CASTELL & SON is on the ground at the entrance to 13 Broad Street. The Castell & Son business moved out in 2022 after occupying this shop for about 180 years and relocated in part of the Shepherd & Woodward premises in the High Street, and the shop is now vacant.
George Castell was born in Oxford in 1812 and baptised at St Peter-in-the-East Church on 30 August, the eldest son of the tailor George Castell senior and his wife Maria. He was admitted free on 18 July 1834, becoming a tailor himself, and by 1846 he had moved here to 13 Broad Street. He went into partnership with his two sons, but on 15 January 1874 the partnership was dissolved when George Loder Castell left for London, and George Castell henceforth until his death in 1878 was in partnership with only his younger son, John Henry Castell.
The shop was taken over in 1896 but the name Castell's survived until 2022. The shop is now vacant.
