Walton Street, Oxford in 1861
The earliest part of Walton Street, running north on the west side as far as Oxford University Press ( the present Nos. 4 to 55) was known as Walton Place. The name changed in the mid-1850s and the whole street was then renumbered. It has retained ths old style of numbering, running 1, 2, 3 etc. up the west side from the south end, crossing the road and then running back down the east side from 89 to 173 (so that No. 1 is opposite 173).
