Francis Frederick GEORGE (1867–1940)

Francis Frederick George was born at St Bernard's Road (then named St John's Road) in Oxford in 1867 and baptised at St Paul's Church on 31 March. He was the son of Frederick George and Elizabeth Berry, who were married at St Michael & All Angels Church in Summertown on 5 February 1866, when they were both living there. By the time of the 1871 census Frederick (4) was living at Kingston Road in Ss Philip & James's parish with his parents. In 1881 their address was given as 23 Kingston Road, and Frederick (14) had a younger brother Albert (7). In 1891 they were living at 151 Kingston Road (one of the houses built by his future father-in-law James Walter in 1870, and possibly the same house as before, but renumbered): both Francis (24) and Albert (17) were now compositors like their father.

Ellen Louisa Walter, the first Mrs George, was born at Little Clarendon Street, Oxford in 1870 and baptised at St Giles' Church on 4 September. She was the eldest child of the builder James Walter of Oxford and Ellen Snell of Marsh Baldon, who were married at St Giles' Church on 29 March 1869. By the time of the 1891 census Ellen (25) was a dressmaker, living with her parents at 21 Southmoor Road.

On 18 April 1892 at St Barnabas's Church in Jericho, Francis Frederick George (25) married Ellen Louisa Walter (21), and they had two children:

• May Ellen Frances George (born in Oxford on 1 May.1893 and baptised at St Barnabas's Church on 28 May);
• Dora Bertha George (born in Oxford on 13 October 1895 and baptised at St Barnabas's Church on 10 November);
• Frederick Walter George (born in Oxford on 22 October 1898 and baptised at St Barnabas's Church on 17 November).

At the time of the 1901 census, Francis (34) and Ellen (30) were living at the St Barnabas Institute in Canal Street with their children May (7), Dora (5), and Frederick (2).

Ellen died in 1905.

† Mrs Ellen Louisa Walter née George died at St Barnabas Institute at the age of 34 on 2 April 1905 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 5 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Barnabas's Church).

The gravestone records that she died on Refreshment Sunday (the fourth Sunday in Lent, also known as Laetare or Mothering Sunday).

Matilda Emma Stillwell, the second Mrs George, was born at Church Street, Lambeth in late 1865 and baptised at St Mary's Church there on 11 February 1866. She was the daughter of the barge builder's labourer Charles Stillwell and his wife Matilda Hawkins, who were married in the Strand district near the end of 1864. She had five siblings: Charles Henry (1859), George (1867), Agnes Charlotte (1868), and Jane Ann (1870).

At the time of the 1871 census Matilda (5) was living at 2 Somerset Street, Battersea with her parents and her siblings Charles (11), George (4), Agnes (2), and James (1).

By the time of the 1891 census Matilda (25) was housemaid to a family in Beckenham called Wills. In 1901 she was a parlourmaid at All Saints Vicarage in Notting Hill.

On 20 August 1906 at St Barnabas's Church in Oxford, Francis Frederick George (39) married his second wife Matilda Emma Stillwell (40).

At the time of the 1911 census Frederick (44) was still working as a compositor at the Clarendon Press, and again was living at St Barnabas Institute in Canal Street, now with his second wife Matilda (45) and his children Dora (15) and Frederick (12) by his first wife. His other daughter May (17) was working as a general servant in the home of Miss Maria Crofton at 25 Winchester Road, Oxford.

In 1928 Francis and Matilda George were living at 21 Kingston Road, but by 1935 they had moved to 31 Southmoor Road, where Matilda died in 1939:

† Mrs Matilda Emma George née Stillwell died at 31 Southmoor Road at the age of 73 on 10 May 1939 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 13 May (burial recorded in the parish register of St Barnabas's Church).

Her husband Francis died less than a year later in 1940:

† Francis Frederick George died at 31 Southmoor Road at the age of 72 on 18 April 1940 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 20 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Barnabas's Church).
