Oxford people stones: Harris, Cuckoo Lane

This street sign stone was commissioned by Ruth Harris of Brackley from the Stile Company.
It is unique in Oxford, as it is both a privately commissioned street sign and a memorial stone.
After it was formally unveiled at a service on 4 May 2003 some local people felt that it resembled a tombstone and was out of place here. Highway officers had allowed it to be erected on the grounds that it is a street sign, which does not require planning permission; but in future any such road signs proposed for Oxford will have to go through the planning procedure
