Oxford Inscriptions: Charles Elton, Park Town

This inscription is set into the path opposite the arch in Park Town. The text reads as follows:

WERE FOR THIRTY YEARS

PIONEER ECOLOGIST
AND CONSERVATIONIST
Charles Elton lived at 61 Park Town next to the arch from 1949 to his death in 1991 and cared for the “jungle” (an area with trees) opposite his house. A blue plaque to Elton and his wife (the poet E. J. Scovell) was erected on the side of his house on 8 June 2024, and there is information about them here on the Oxfordshire Blue Plaques website.
