This plaque is on a house on the west side of Oriel Street is named after President Jimmy Carter. The house was bought and restored in 1984 through a gift from William Nelson Turpin and now forms part of Oriel's Island site, connected to the main college by a tunnel under the road.
William Nelson Turpin was born in Macon, Georgia (the President's home state) on 3 September 1923. He came up to Oriel College as a Rhodes Scholar and was awarded a degree in PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics). He joined the US Foreign Service in 1948. He died in Annapolis, Maryland on 21 July 2004.
Nancy Bissell Turpin, his third wife, died in 1996.
