Oxford Ghost Signs: Twining's grocer's shop at 294 Banbury Road
The words TWINING and HOUSE are engraved on stones on each side of the front door of this shop at 294 Banbury Road. Francis Twining (1848–1929) lived in Summertown House just north of Apsley Road on the Banbury Road and opened this branch of his grocer’s shop chain here in Summertown in 1902.
In this photograph of the shop in 1971 when it was Moore’s wine stores the front looks very different from that in the 2001 photograph below, and it seems likely that this inscription is relatively modern and made during restoration rather than being a true ghost sign.
