Oxford Ghost Signs: Cornmarket
Woolworth's (on the site of the former Clarendon Hotel)
The Woolworth's logo survives underneath the sign for CLARENDON HOUSE in Cornmarket, with the date 1957 hiding within the curves of the letter W. The initials WHM probably stand for William Harvey Moore, but SAP is uncertain.
The shop closed in 1983 and was turned into smaller units with a pedestrian mall.

W. H. Smith at 23 Cornmarket
The gable of 22 Cornmarket Street, which was purpose-built in 1915 for the newsagents W. H. Smith, “A.D. / W.H.S / 1915”. They expanded into No. 23 to the left in the 1970s.
This became a ghost sign in 2025 when all the W. H. Smith shops (but not those in stations, were sold to Modella Capital and were given the made-up name of T. G. Jones.
