Oxford History: Mayors & Lord Mayors

Thomas, son of Walter, aka Thomas Submuro (fl. 1250)

Mayor of Oxford 1247/8 and 1250/1

Thomas, son of Walter was also known as Thomas Submuro.

He was the brother of Adam Submuro, who was bailiff in 1240 and 1241, and his father, Walter, was known as “Walter sub muro”, suggesting that the family home had been beside the town wall of Oxford.

Thomas Submuro was elected Mayor of Oxford for 1247/8, and again for 1250/1.

Both Thomas and Adam Submuro appear in a list of “nomina maiorum burgensium Oxonie” in 1253.

Thomas Submuro died after 1253.
