Robert Stone (b.1811)
Robert Stone was baptised at St Clement’s Church in Oxford on 12 November 1811. He was the fifth child of the apothecary & surgeon Deodatus Stone and his wife Anness Read. His mother died when he was one, and from the age of nine he had a stepmother.
On 25 August 1835 at St Mary-the-Virgin Church Robert Stone, described as being of St Clement’s parish, married Susan Jubber of St Mary-the-Virgin parish. Soon after their marriage they moved to 6 St Aldate’s Street, where Stone is listed as a surgeon in Robson’s Directory for 1839.
Stone and his wife Susan had the following four children:
- Susan Ann Stone (born in 1836, but no baptism recorded; died at St Aldate's the age of three, and buried at St Clement’s Churchyard on 27 December 1839)
- Deodatus Robert Stone (baptised at St Martin’s Church on 7 September 1837, died at St Aldate's the age of two, and buried at St Clement’s Churchyard on 27 December 1839)
- Rosa Mary Stone (privately baptised on 2 January 1839, publicly baptised in St Martin’s Church on 18 February 1840)
- Deodatus Turner Stone (baptised at St Martin’s Church on 20 May 1841)
- Robert Henry Stone (baptised at Willesborough, Kent on 10 March 1850).
In 1838 Robert Stone, described as a surgeon and apothecary of St Aldate's Street, went bankrupt.
At the time of the 1841 census Susan and her two surviving children Rosa (2) and Deodatus Turner Stone (two months) were living in St Aldate's Street, and the surgeon Thomas Slatter was lodging in another part of the house. Her husband was not at home.
In 1851 Susan Stone was at 6 William Terrace in Lambeth with her two surviving sons Deodatus Stone (9) and Robert Henry Stone (3).
There is a suggestion that the family may then have moved to the USA.
